What each one is

Runpod

A cloud platform for AI and general compute. You rent GPU Pods billed by the second for compute and storage, with no fees for data ingress or egress, run serverless endpoints, and attach network storage. Rates are listed per GPU for two tiers, Community Cloud and Secure Cloud. Our entry is Runpod.

Lambda

Lambda's pricing page covers three products: Instances, 1-Click Clusters and Superclusters. Instances are self-serve GPU machines you deploy in minutes, on a first-come basis. The page says to contact them for reserved capacity at the lowest prices. Our entry is Lambda Cloud.

The shape of the difference: Runpod is a menu of many cards and two quality tiers. Lambda is a short list of cards sold as full machines, with a large-cluster business behind it.

GPU prices side by side

Per GPU per hour, from each page on 31 October 2026. Lambda's price falls as the instance gets bigger (the 1x price is the highest, 8x the lowest).

Reading it:

  • H100 SXM. Runpod Secure Cloud ($3.99) matches Lambda's 8x rate ($3.99) and is below Lambda's single-GPU rate ($4.29). Runpod Community ($2.69) is about a third cheaper.
  • B200. Runpod Community ($5.98) is below Lambda's best rate ($6.69). Runpod Secure ($7.99) is above Lambda.
  • Older cards. Runpod lists a wider range of cheap cards. Lambda's A6000 is $1.09 against Runpod's $0.33 to $0.59.
  • Not like for like. Lambda lists the machine around the GPU: for example, an 8x H100 SXM node has 208 vCPUs, 1,800 GiB of RAM and 22 TiB of SSD, and a single H100 SXM has 26 vCPUs, 225 GiB RAM and 2.75 TiB. Runpod's Pod specs differ by listing.

Lambda's prices are listed plus applicable sales tax, VAT or GST.

For jobs that need a lot of system memory or local disk, such as big data loading or checkpoint-heavy training, those specs are the point. A fixed, generous machine beats a variable Pod when you cannot tolerate surprises.

Clusters

Lambda's 1-Click Clusters are production-ready clusters of 16 to 2,000-plus NVIDIA B200 or H100 GPUs. The listed rates, per GPU hour, for terms from two weeks to one year:

Cluster

256 or more

HGX B200

$9.86

$9.36

$8.87

H100

$6.16

$5.85

$5.54

These rates are higher per GPU than single instances, because they include cluster networking and management. Terms of one year or more have no listed price and go through Lambda's team. The page also lists Superclusters for the largest deployments.

Runpod's pricing page lists multi-GPU Pods and, in the sections we read, no equivalent managed cluster product.. For training at hundreds of GPUs, ask both vendors for a quote and compare the networking, not only the hourly rate.

Billing and extras

Runpod. Per-second billing for Pods; storage $0.05 to $0.20 per GB a month by type, and $0.07 per GB a month for network volumes under 1 TB; no fees for ingress or egress; a default spend limit of $80 an hour; Pods stop at zero balance, and Pods without a network volume are terminated with data lost.

Lambda. Prices are per GPU per hour.. The page says self-serve access is first come, so a popular GPU may not be available when you want it.

Serverless and inference

Runpod has serverless endpoints with flex workers that scale to zero and active workers that stay warm, plus a default idle timeout of five seconds. Lambda's pricing page lists no serverless product. If you need to serve a model behind an API with spiky traffic, Runpod or Modal fit better. If you need an always-on GPU server you control, either works.

Reliability and availability

Neither page publishes uptime figures in the sections we read.. Practical differences are visible, though. Runpod splits hosting into Community and Secure tiers by price. Lambda sells one tier but warns of first-come availability for instances. For anything critical, keep checkpoints on storage outside the machine and be ready to move to another host.

Who should pick which

A student or hobbyist

Runpod, for the low-cost consumer cards. An RTX 4090 at $0.34 an hour on Community Cloud is hard to beat for small experiments.

A startup fine-tuning models

Runpod for price, or Lambda for a clean, fully specified machine. Rent the same size on both for an hour and see which workflow suits you.

A team serving a model

Runpod Serverless or Modal for spiky traffic. Lambda or a Runpod Pod for an always-on service.

A lab training at scale

Lambda 1-Click Clusters, or another large-cluster provider. Request quotes with networking details.

A cost-sensitive team with sensitive data

Check the data terms of whichever you choose. Neither page, as we read it, states data handling in the sections we fetched. For private workloads, see cloud vs self-hosted AI.

The cluster row is a Lambda 1-Click Cluster at the 16-GPU rate for the shortest listed term. It is the kind of figure where you should ask for a quote rather than trust a list price, since terms and networking matter.

For small jobs the gap is real but small in absolute dollars. A single day on one H100 differs by about $38 between Runpod Community and Lambda. For a team running several cards for weeks, the same gap compounds, and so does the value of a fixed machine that does not surprise you.

How to choose in an hour

  1. Write down the card, the number of GPUs, the memory and local disk you need, and how many hours.
  2. Price it on both pages with the table above.
  3. If the job fits a single GPU and can tolerate a shared host, price Community Cloud first.
  4. If you need lots of system RAM or local SSD, compare Lambda's stated specs with what a Runpod Pod gives you.
  5. If you need many GPUs with fast interconnect, get a cluster quote from Lambda and others.
  6. Rent the smallest card for an hour on each, run a short version of your job, and compare cost and time.
  7. Set a budget alert or credit cap before the real run, and save checkpoints off the machine.

Limits and gotchas

  • Prices differ by size at Lambda. The 1x rate is higher than 8x.
  • Tax is extra at Lambda, per the page's footnote.
  • First-come availability. Popular GPUs sell out.
  • Runpod zero balance. Pods without a network volume are terminated.
  • Tier choice at Runpod. Secure Cloud is 29 to 160 percent above Community on many cards.
  • Idle cost. Both bill while an instance exists. Stop what you are not using.
  • Compare specs, not only rates. CPU, RAM and disk change the real value.

Resources per GPU

A price per GPU hour hides what comes with the GPU. Lambda's table lets us divide its machine specs by the GPU count.

The H100 rows give each GPU the same share of the machine, whatever the size. So the $0.30 gap between the 1x and 8x rates is a volume price, not a different machine. The GH200 is the odd one: a much larger share of CPU and memory per GPU at a lower hourly price, for jobs that are bound by memory and data loading and not by raw GPU speed.

Runpod's pricing table does not list a CPU and RAM share in the sections we read, and the share varies by Pod. If your job is data-loading heavy, start a Pod, check what it gives you with nproc and free -g, and compare it with the Lambda figures above before you decide which hourly price is the better deal.

On the large run, Runpod Secure and Lambda land on the same total, so the choice there rests on the machine specs and on whether Runpod can give you eight GPUs together, which the page does not promise. On the B200 run, Lambda's best rate is lower than Runpod Secure's and higher than Runpod Community's. A Community Pod is a shared host, so it suits work that tolerates a restart and saves checkpoints.

What a forgotten machine costs

Both vendors bill while an instance exists. A single H100 SXM left running over a 60-hour weekend costs $161.40 on Runpod Community, $239.40 on Runpod Secure and $257.40 on Lambda's 1x rate. For a small team that is a real number, and it is the most common avoidable bill on any GPU platform. Set a budget alert, tag every instance with its owner and an end date, and make stopping it part of the job script.

Questions people ask

Which is cheaper? On list price per GPU hour, Runpod Community Cloud is lowest on most cards both list. Lambda's 8x H100 rate matches Runpod Secure.

Is Community Cloud safe for sensitive work? It is a shared host, and the pages we read do not state data terms. For private workloads, read the terms or choose a route that gives you control of the machine.

Do I need a cluster? Only if one node's eight GPUs are not enough. Lambda lists 1-Click Clusters from 16 GPUs. We found no equivalent managed product in Runpod's pricing sections we read.

Our take

Runpod is the better default for most individuals and small teams: lower rates, more card choices, and a serverless option. Lambda is the better fit when you want a stated machine, or a large training cluster from a vendor that sells them.

We did not rent from either for this page and make no claims about speed or uptime. The prices come from their pricing pages on 31 October 2026, and the open points are marked. Rent the card you need for one hour on each, run your actual job and compare cost per finished run.
