How AI credits work
GitHub moved Copilot to usage-based billing. When you use a model feature, the interaction consumes tokens: input, output and cached. Each is priced by the model used, and the total converts to AI credits at 1 credit = $0.01. A quick chat with a light model costs a fraction of a credit. A long cloud-agent session on a frontier model costs many.
Paid individual plans split the allowance in two:
- Base credits match your subscription price and never change. Pro's 1,000 credits equal $10, Pro+'s 3,900 equal $39, Max's 10,000 equal $100.
- Flex allotment is an extra amount on top that GitHub says is "designed to adapt as the economics of AI evolve, including model pricing, new models, and improvements in efficiency." In other words, it can change.
Base credits are used first. Then the flex allotment is applied at the same rates across your IDE, GitHub.com and Copilot CLI.
What costs credits, and what is free
Draws on credits | Does not draw credits |
|---|---|
Copilot Chat | Code completions |
Copilot CLI | Next edit suggestions |
Copilot cloud agent | |
Copilot Spaces | |
Spark | |
Third-party coding agents |
Inline suggestions are unlimited on all paid plans, and on Business and Enterprise they stay free even when a user has a $0 budget or reaches an enforced spending limit. Copilot Free is limited to 2,000 completions a month, and Student has unlimited completions.
What drives usage
GitHub names three factors. Conversation length and complexity, because longer chats mean more back-and-forth. Agentic features, because agent mode and the cloud agent can make many model calls inside one task. And model choice, because capable reasoning models cost more per token than light ones. Switching to a cheaper model is the simplest way to stretch your allowance.
There are also two discounts on paid plans. A 10 percent discount on model costs applies when you use auto model selection in Chat or the cloud agent. Through 30 November 2026, paid plans get a 30 percent discount on model costs when using Copilot Fusion.
Resets
Included credits do not carry over. Your allowance resets in full at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month, regardless of your billing date.
Running out of credits
For individuals, GitHub offers three options.
- Upgrade. The cost is only the price difference between your plan and the next. Credits you already used this cycle count within the new, larger allowance, and you are not charged for both plans.
- Pay for more. Set a budget in dollars. Credits draw it down at $0.01 each, so a $10 budget covers 1,000 credits. Additional usage may be capped, and you may need to pay off what you have used to continue.
- Wait for the monthly reset.
Here is a useful sum. Pro to Pro+ costs $29 more and adds 5,500 credits, so each extra credit costs about $0.0053. Buying credits at $0.01 is almost twice as expensive per credit as stepping up a plan. Pro+ to Max adds $61 and 13,000 credits, about $0.0047 each. If you regularly overshoot, upgrading is cheaper than paying overage. This is our arithmetic from the published figures.
Which models are available
On Pro, Pro+ and Max, the list includes models from several vendors. GitHub's docs list Claude (Haiku 4.5 and 5.5, Opus 4.8, 5 and 5.5, Fable 5 and 5.1, Sonnet 4.6, 5 and 5.5), Gemini (3.8 Flash and 4 Argon), GPT (5.3-Codex, 5.4 nano, 5.6 Luna, Sol and Terra, 6 Astra, Luna and Sol, 6.1 Sol and Terra), Grok (4.5, 4.6, 4.7), Kimi K3 and MAI-Code-1.1-Flash. Free and Student get auto model selection only. The exact per-plan availability, and which models cost more, is in GitHub's "Models and pricing for GitHub Copilot" page.
For model details, see Claude models, GPT models and Gemini models.
Free plans
Copilot Free is for individual developers who do not have Copilot through an organization. It has limited access to a selection of features, an allowance of AI credits, 2,000 completions a month and auto model selection only. Copilot Chat on GitHub.com and GitHub Mobile works; Copilot in the cloud needs a paid plan.
Copilot Student is free for verified students, with an AI credit allowance, unlimited completions and auto model selection only. It excludes third-party agents.
GitHub also says verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may be eligible for free Copilot Pro.
Business and Enterprise
Both charge per granted seat per month and pool credits across the organization. Business gives 1,900 credits per user ($19 seat) and Enterprise 3,900 ($39). Usage beyond the pool is billed at $0.01 per AI credit. If credits run out, users see a banner offering to request more budget from an administrator.
Enterprise adds a larger monthly pool, priority access to new models and features, and enterprise-grade capabilities for organizations using GitHub Enterprise Cloud. Both plans bring centralized management and Copilot policy controls. Copilot is not currently available for GitHub Enterprise Server.
Copilot access
For eligible enterprises GitHub offers a different billing model with no included credits. Users with a GitHub Enterprise Cloud license pay $0 per seat, and users without one can have Copilot Standalone at $10 per user per month. Usage is metered and billed from the first use. Feature and model eligibility matches Enterprise. An enterprise must choose one model: Copilot access cannot sit beside Business or Enterprise seats in the same enterprise. Existing Business and Enterprise plans remain supported, and moving is voluntary.
If you hold a personal Pro, Pro+ or Max plan and then get a seat through your organization, your personal plan is canceled automatically, with a prorated refund of the remaining cycle.
Agents and models by plan
GitHub's plan overview gives this much, and we have kept to what it states.
Plan | Agents | Models |
|---|---|---|
Free | Limited | Auto model selection only |
Student | Excludes third-party agents | Auto model selection only |
Pro | Copilot in the cloud, agent mode, MCP | A selection of models |
Pro+ | Same | Access to premium models |
Max | Same | Priority access to premium models |
Business | Same, with organization policy management | Access to premium models |
Enterprise and Copilot access | Same, with enterprise-grade capabilities | Priority access to premium models |
Copilot in the cloud needs a paid plan; Free users keep Copilot Chat on GitHub.com and GitHub Mobile. Free also gets only the "Review selection" form of code review in VS Code.
What credits buy
Because 1 credit is $0.01, Pro's 1,500 credits are worth $15 of metered model usage at whatever GitHub charges per token. If GitHub's per-token charge matches vendor list prices, which we have not confirmed, a session using 2 million input tokens and 100,000 output tokens on a model priced at $2 and $10 per million would cost $5, or 500 credits. Three such sessions would use all of Pro's allowance. That is why model choice matters so much: a light model can stretch the same credits many times further.
Individual or organization?
Situation | Better choice |
|---|---|
One developer, casual use | Free, then Pro |
One developer, daily agent use | Pro+ or Max |
Two to ten developers, shared policy | Business at $19 per seat |
Larger company on GitHub Enterprise Cloud | Enterprise, or Copilot access at $0 plus metered billing |
A student | Student plan |
Business is cheaper per seat than Pro+, and its credits are pooled, so a light user's unused credits cover a heavy one's. That pooling is the main economic argument for a team plan.
Questions we hear
Can I cancel any time? GitHub's docs say you can cancel a Copilot plan at any time, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.
When am I billed? If you are not already billed by GitHub, your cycle usually starts on the day you sign up. If you already have a GitHub billing cycle, Copilot joins your next bill pro rata.
Does Copilot work outside VS Code? GitHub lists minimum versions for VS Code, Visual Studio 2022 and 2026, SQL Server Management Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, Xcode and the Copilot CLI, which tells you where the product is supported.
Is there an annual plan? The plan pages we read list monthly prices only.
Our take
Copilot is the cheapest paid entry point among the major coding assistants at $10, and the one with the clearest rule on what is free: completions are unlimited, and everything model-driven draws from a credit pool priced at a flat penny per credit. That transparency is good. The flex allotment is the part to watch, since GitHub says it adapts to the economics of AI and so can move.
Two decisions follow. If most of your usage is inline completion and quick chat, Pro's 1,500 credits likely cover you, and the price is hard to beat. If you lean on the cloud agent or agent mode with frontier models, credits drain quickly, and the upgrade-versus-overage arithmetic above says to move up a tier before paying penny-rate overage. We did not run usage tests, so we cannot say how long 1,500 credits last on your work.

Checklist
- Check whether you qualify for free Pro (student, teacher, open source maintainer).
- Set a monthly budget in dollars before buying extra credits.
- Use auto model selection for the 10 percent discount where it fits.
- Remember that credits reset on the 1st at 00:00 UTC, not on your billing date.
- Update your IDE and Copilot extension; GitHub lists minimum versions for accurate billing display.
- If your employer gives you a seat, expect your personal plan to be canceled.
Budgeting tips
Set a monthly additional-usage budget before you need one, because Copilot says additional usage may be capped and you may need to pay off what you have used to continue. Use auto model selection for routine work to earn the 10 percent model-cost discount, and reserve premium models for tasks that justify them. Remember that the allowance resets on the first of the month in UTC, so a heavy last week of the month followed by a fresh allowance is cheaper than a heavy first week followed by weeks of waiting.
Questions
How much does GitHub Copilot cost?
Copilot Free costs nothing. Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ is $39 and Max is $100. For organizations, Business is $19 per granted seat per month and Enterprise is $39. Copilot access is $0 for GitHub Enterprise Cloud users or $10 per user as Copilot Standalone.
What are GitHub AI Credits?
The unit Copilot uses to meter model usage. One AI credit equals $0.01. Each plan includes a monthly allowance, and Chat, the CLI, cloud agent and other model features draw it down. Code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits.
Is GitHub Copilot free for students?
Yes. Copilot Student is free for verified students, with an AI credit allowance, auto model selection only and unlimited code completions. Verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may get free Copilot Pro.
What happens when I run out of AI credits?
On an individual plan you can upgrade (paying only the difference), set a budget to buy more credits at $0.01 each, or wait for the monthly reset at 00:00 UTC on the first of the month.
Do unused Copilot credits roll over?
No. Unused credits are forfeited and the allowance resets in full at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month.
