What the limits mean in practice

Pro has two usage layers: a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit across all models. The five-hour clock starts with your first message and refills in full five hours later. The weekly reset happens at a fixed time assigned to your account, which you can see in Settings, Usage.

Anthropic does not publish a message count. It says the number depends on message length, attached files, how long the conversation is, and which model or feature you use. The usage-limit best-practices article lists more factors: tool use such as Research and web search, effort level, Artifact creation, and multi-step tasks like running code or browsing.

Three consequences follow.

  1. Opus uses your allowance faster than Sonnet. Anthropic says model choice affects how quickly you reach a limit. The pricing page gives no ratio, so we will not either.
  2. Long chats cost more. A conversation that triggers automatic context management consumes more of your limit. Start a new chat when you change topic.
  3. Claude Code is in the same bucket. An afternoon of agent coding and an evening of chat draw from one allowance. For a developer, this is the main reason people outgrow Pro.

Anthropic also says it may adjust limits at its discretion to manage capacity, including weekly and monthly caps or limits by model and feature. Pro is priced as a consumer plan, so read the multipliers as ratios, not commitments.

Claude Code on Pro

Claude Code is on Pro, which makes $17 a month the cheapest official way to run it. You install the tool, then log in with your Claude account. Your IDE extensions, including VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains, use the same login and the same limits.

On Pro you will sometimes see "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". That is a small, capped allowance that lets Claude Code finish a step in progress when you hit the five-hour limit. On Pro it applies up to once per weekly period, it counts toward your weekly limit, and it does not apply to a new message sent after you hit the limit. Anthropic says it is rolling out gradually and needs Claude Code 2.1.277 or later. Our Claude Code pricing page covers the other ways to pay for the tool.

If you also have ANTHROPIC_API_KEY set in your shell, Claude Code will use the key and bill API rates instead of drawing on Pro. Anthropic calls this out in its help center. Unset it if you want your subscription used.

Models on Pro

Sonnet, Haiku and Opus are all available on Pro. The context window is "up to 1M, varies by model" per the plan table.

Fable is the exception. It is Anthropic's top model, and on Pro it runs on usage credits at API rates from the first token. That means $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output for Fable 5.1. The earlier promotion that put Fable 5 inside plan limits ended on 19 July 2026 at 11:59:59 PM PT, and Fable 5.1 was never part of it. Eligible Pro accounts got a one-time credit for the Fable 5 change; there is no equivalent for 5.1.

Running past the limit: usage credits

You do not have to stop at the limit. Usage credits are a pay-as-you-go layer on Pro:

  • Enable them in Settings, Usage.
  • Prepay a balance with "Add funds".
  • Set a monthly spend cap, or choose unlimited.
  • Optionally turn on auto-reload when the balance drops.

Once any included limit is used up, requests keep working and bill at standard API rates. Limits still reset on schedule, and credits do not change the timing. Usage credits are charged on top of your subscription and appear as additional charges. If you subscribed through an app store, you can only enable credits on the web version of Claude.

Credits are the right tool for an occasional crunch. If you need them every week, compare the bill to Max.

Pro or Max?

The upgrade is $20 to $100, and the usage is 5x. Both numbers scale together, so Max is not a bulk discount. It is a way to stop being interrupted.

Your pattern

Better choice

Hit the five-hour limit once or twice a week

Stay on Pro, add usage credits

Hit the weekly limit most weeks

Max

Spend usage credits above about $80 a month

Max, because it replaces them

Need Fable regularly

Max, which includes it up to half your weekly limit

Build with the API too

Max, which includes $100 a month in API credits

The $80 line is simple arithmetic: Max costs $80 more than monthly Pro. Credits beyond that would buy the same extra usage at list price, though not at the same rate Max gives. We cannot say exactly how many API-dollars of tokens a Max plan holds, because Anthropic publishes only the multiplier.

When you upgrade, the new limits apply right away. Moving from an annual Pro plan to Max, if the remaining value of your annual plan exceeds the Max price, you get an account credit for the balance, applied to future subscription costs. You must use the same billing address as before. If your address changed, Anthropic says to cancel Pro, wait for the end date and sign up fresh. See Claude Max plan.

Pro or Team?

A Team Standard seat costs $20 a month on annual billing, or $25 monthly, with a two-member minimum. That is about the same as Pro. What it adds is not usage per se, though Anthropic says Standard seats get more than Pro. It adds admin tools, single sign-on, enterprise search across Slack and Microsoft 365, project sharing, spend controls and no training on your content by default.

If you are one person, Pro is cheaper by $3 a month on the annual plan and has no seat minimum. If you are two or more people sharing work, Team is worth checking.

Pro or the API?

Pro does not include API access. Anthropic says so in the help article: if you want both enhanced Claude features and the API, you need Console access and a separate payment. Pro is the right meter for a person working with Claude. The API is the right meter for software calling Claude. Pro's price is flat, while API billing is per token, with Sonnet 5.5 at $2 in and $10 out.

Annual or monthly

Annual is a one-time $200 charge. Switching from monthly to annual in Settings, Billing credits any unused monthly time toward your first annual invoice.

If you

Have used Claude daily for three months

Annual

Might move to Max within the year

Monthly, or accept the account credit mechanics

Annual

Because payments are generally non-refundable, a mistaken annual purchase is a $200 mistake. The credit you get when upgrading to Max softens that, but it is not a refund.

Questions we hear

Is there a student price? Not for Pro. Anthropic says it does not offer standard discounted pricing on individual plans and that its support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons. It does run occasional limited-time promotions, announced through its official channels. Universities can buy a separate Education plan; no public price is listed.

Does the monthly plan renew on its own? Anthropic's pages describe Pro as a subscription you can choose monthly or annually. We did not find the cancellation terms on the pricing page.

Does Pro work on my phone and desktop? Yes. Chat is on web, desktop, iOS and Android on every plan, and Pro adds the handoff and scheduled-task features.

Where do I see how much I have used? In Settings, Usage on claude.ai, which shows the current session, the weekly bar and any usage-credit spend. In Claude Code, run /usage.

Our take

Pro is the best-priced plan Anthropic sells, and the annual option is the reason. For $17 you get the full chat product, Opus, Research and Claude Code. The same money elsewhere buys narrower tools. We have not run side-by-side tests, so we make no claim about quality, only price and what each plan lists.

The weak spot is the shared usage pool. If you plan to code with Claude all day, Pro will feel tight, and the honest fix is Max. If you code a few evenings a week, Pro plus a usage-credit cap of $20 or $30 is a safe, bounded setup.

Check two things before paying. First, if you want Fable, Pro is the wrong plan; pay with credits or buy Max. Second, if you rely on priority access at busy times, read the discrepancy above and confirm on the live pricing page.

Checklist before you subscribe

  • Confirm you need Claude Code, Opus or Research. If not, Free may be enough.
  • Choose annual only after a month of real use.
  • Set a low monthly usage-credit cap, such as $20, or leave credits off.
  • Unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY if you want Claude Code on your subscription.
  • Check your region's price on claude.ai/upgrade, and whether tax is included.
  • Subscribed on mobile? Plan to enable usage credits on the web.

One more check before you pay

Look at your own usage on Free first. If you hit the Free limit most days, Pro is the obvious step. If you never reach it, the extra features are the only reason to pay, so decide which of Claude Code, Opus, Research and Claude in Chrome you would use weekly.

Questions

How much is Claude Pro?

$20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on an annual plan, which is $200 billed up front. Prices are for US customers and exclude tax; other regions see local pricing.

Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?

Yes. Claude Code is included on Pro and every plan above it. It shares one usage pool with chat.

Does Claude Pro include the API?

No. Anthropic says Pro does not include API usage through the Console. API use is billed per token on a separate account.

Can I get Claude Pro for free or at a discount?

There is no standard discount for Pro, Max or Ultra and support cannot issue one-off coupons. Anthropic runs occasional limited-time promotions, and the annual plan is the only built-in saving.

Is Fable included in Pro?

No. On Pro, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 run on pay-as-you-go usage credits, not in your plan limits. Max and Ultra include Fable up to half the weekly limit.
